Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opener Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with comments made by skipper Stokes regarding the team environment not being "weak men".

The all-rounder made those words in multiple interviews following his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes versus the Australians earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England are staring at defeat with a match to spare, the captain stated he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" within the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

But, after Crawley scored 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to England suffered a loss in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently took a break to Noosa between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before this match, Stokes said his players had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to stay alive in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the guidance from the captain and head coach McCullum had remained in line with their previous tenure in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of something special entering this game."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket on day four came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – left England six down for 207 chasing a notional total of 435.

Consequently, the home team need just four more wickets on the final day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 lead after three Tests.

Defeat would prolong England's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes series loss.

The current battle will be completed in just eleven days of play – after England fell the initial matches in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," said the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. They're a very, very good team. It was always going to be tough touring here to face them. They were the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's performance in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his short-term place in the side, Pope looks under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 runs in the team's second knock on Saturday, adding to his poor record against Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a half-century and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

However, Crawley said any notion Pope is under the microscope originates with "the media" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is talk from the outside. There is no chat of that nature on Ollie in the camp," Crawley finished.
