France will start stopping migrant vessels in Channel after British demands
French officials have consented to begin intercepting small boats in the Channel, after months of insistence from the UK.
This policy shift follows the British leader sent a letter to the French leader urging him to support the plan and stating there presently "lack any effective deterrent" in the maritime passage.
French maritime police have been authorized to intercept the migrant vessels at sea, but only before they've collected their migrants, according to official confirmation.
French authorities have infrequently intervened to prevent the overcrowded boats leaving the coastline because it is viewed as too great a risk to both officers and individuals.
"It is crucial that we implement these methods this period... We have no effective deterrent in the Channel waters."
Now, a French naval police representative says personnel will begin intervening at sea, with the objective of safeguarding lives.
Significantly, the spokesperson ruled out the use of nets to intercept boats, which had earlier been reported as a potential technique to snarl the propellers of the vessels.
The decision to take action at all is a major step forward, following a short-lived shift towards a more aggressive approach this warmer season, which ceased when the previous Interior Minister left government.
This was demonstrated in July, in the run-up to a meeting between the UK leader and French president, when French police were witnessed walking into the sea to damage the hulls of a boat.
Now French authorities will again be permitted to intercept boats prior to they collect migrant passengers from the coastal areas of northern France, however it's uncertain how the vessels will be prevented.
Powerful gusts are presently delaying the start of interceptions and the people-smuggling networks will be seeking ways to adapt to evade detection, as they have frequently done in the previous instances.
The Home Office and Downing Street have been approached for comment.
